WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum

The WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum provides competency-based training for all levels of WIC staff that provide breastfeeding promotion and support.

The curriculum is available to WIC agencies through Publication Ordering and Hightail file sharing. In addition, self-study videos are available on Percipio. To access or order, follow the links on the right-side panel or, on mobile, the bottom of the page.

The curriculum has four (4) learning tiers. Each level builds on the previous tier. Levels 1 and 2 are available in Spanish. The tiered levels include:

Level 1 - for all WIC staff

Basic breastfeeding promotion, importance of breastfeeding.

Level 2 - for peer counselors and other WIC staff who support new mothers with breastfeeding

Supporting normal breastfeeding.

Level 3 - for WIC Competent Professional Authorities (CPAs) and breastfeeding coordinators

Assisting mothers with breastfeeding concerns, clinic practices that support breastfeeding.

Level 4 - for WIC Designated Breastfeeding Experts

Helping mothers with complex breastfeeding challenges that are beyond the scope of practice for Level 2 and 3 staff.

Additional resources to facilitate effective training such as Presenter Notes and supplemental resources such as a Technology Guide, Trainer Guide, and Self-Study Users Guide can found in the Resources folder (located within the libraries on the flash drive).

This training replaces the previous FNS trainings including:

  • Using Loving Support to Grow and Glow in WIC
  • Loving Support Through Peer Counseling: A Journey Together - For Training Peer Counselors
  • Loving Support Through Peer Counseling - For WIC Managers

The WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum resource is available for WIC agencies to order (delivered on a unencrypted USB drive) using the Publications Ordering Form.

Please contact your FNS Regional Office with any questions.
