Overview
One of the purposes of the WIC program is to help infant caregivers and parents properly care for and meet the needs of babies in their care. The goal of this course is to introduce WIC staff to baby behavior concepts and techniques. Using this knowledge, you can educate and support caregivers and parents on how to appropriately respond to behaviors and cues of infants.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Discuss why understanding infant behavior is important for proper feeding and ongoing development of the child.
- Identify common beliefs parents and caregivers hold about infants that may not be entirely accurate.
- Identify and describe the various infant states of behavior.
- Identify the correct responses to several infant behaviors in the areas of engagement, crying, eating, and sleeping.
- Discuss a variety of ways baby behavior can be taught to parents and caregivers at a WIC agency, both in one-on-one and group settings.
