Recipes to cook, eat, and repeat

""

The WIC food package is among the top reasons for continued participation in WIC. Providing participants with recipes is a great way to help them get the most out of their food packages, inspire them to try new foods, and encourage lifelong healthy eating.

Parents and caregivers can foster healthy dietary habits and increase children's vegetable consumption by involving them in meal planning and recipe selection (like letting them choose which vegetables are included in a meal) as well as shopping and/or food preparation. Check out the Kitchen Helper Activities handout for ways to get preschoolers to help in the kitchen and Healthy Tips for Picky Eaters (also available in Spanish).

WIC Meals of the Month (MOM) is an opportunity for the WIC community to share recipes of their own, or from their favorite sources. This WIC MOM features recipes that focus on heart healthy foods and are courtesy of Emily from Maryland WIC and Melanie from the National Office. Thanks Emily and Melanie! Overnight Oats - Cinnamon Apple

A great make-ahead, healthy, and versatile breakfast - with so many mix-in options, the variations are endless! On the go? Make it in a mason jar or other resealable container that travels well.

Fish Tacos with Tangy Slaw

Try this twist on a traditional slaw for a heart healthy way to change up taco night. By limiting salt, using nonfat yogurt instead of sour cream or mayo, and using a lean protein such as fish, this recipe will help keep your heart in tip-top shape!

Butternut Squash Soup

This recipe keeps the ingredients simple so the roasted squash flavor takes the spotlight - most of the flavor comes from the cooking method. The result is a rich bowl of nutritious goodness. Bonus: roast the seeds and enjoy them as you would any other seed. What a great twofer!!
