Purpose

Determine how much of a particular infant formula product can be issued per infant feeding category (i.e., partially breastfed or fully formula fed) and food package time frame (e.g., 0-3 months, 4-5 months, etc.).

Provides issuance amounts by either (or both) issuance methodologies.

Determine how much of a particular infant formula product can be issued to an individual infant to meet their assessed needs and avoid over-issuing formula/provide the minimal amount of formula to support continued breastfeeding.

Identifies if there is an individual tailoring opportunity.  

Data Needed

Infant formula product information.

State agency's infant formula issuance method (round-up or monthly maximum allowance)

Infant formula product information

Food package category and time frame for the infant being assessed, as well as desired issuance frequency (i.e., 1 week, 2 weeks, monthly)

Caregiver's input about an infant's daily intake - the number of feeds per day and the typical amount consumed per feed

Action Options

Update the agency's MIS to ensure infant formula amounts cannot exceed Federal maximum amounts.

Individually tailor infant formula amounts or change the food package to meet the needs of an individual infant.
