About WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counseling
Breastfeeding peer counselors add a critical dimension to WIC’s efforts to help women initiate and continue breastfeeding. WIC breastfeeding peer counselors provide a valuable service to their communities, addressing barriers to breastfeeding by offering breastfeeding education, support, and role modeling.  They are familiar with the resources available to WIC participants and the questions a new breastfeeding mother may ask, and recognize when to refer mothers to other resources when issues outside their scope of practice arise.

About the Training
FNS has developed training and technical assistance to equip WIC Programs with a framework for designing and maintaining peer counseling programs. Developing this training included formative research to understand barriers and motivators to implementing and sustaining peer counseling programs and develop training curricula.

The downloadable files include the training platform for WIC Managers, instructional guides and additional training resources, including:

  • WIC Breastfeeding Model Components for Peer Counseling
  • Training Facilitator Guide
  • Speaker Notes
  • Handouts
  • Peer Counselor Handbook
  • Evaluation Form
  • Pre/Post Test forms
  • CEU Certificates
