Marijuana Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding FAQs

The Safest Choice is to Avoid Marijuana

As more states legalize marijuana for recreational or medical use, questions may arise about the safety of marijuana use among pregnant and breastfeeding women. This site, also available in Spanish, offers some frequently asked questions about the safety and effects of marijuana during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Additional information includes AAP's clinical report, Marijuana Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Implications for Childhood Outcomes.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends women who are pregnant or breastfeeding avoid marijuana use. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) also recommends that obstetrician-gynecologists counsel women against using marijuana while trying to get pregnant, during pregnancy, and while they are breastfeeding.
