Creating Accessible Digital Content

Do you create sharable electronic content such as websites, social media messages or documents in formats such as PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, or Word? If so, ensuring that all content is created in an accessible format is important so that everyone, including persons with disabilities, can read and understand the content. This has become especially important with virtual WIC certifications, meetings, and education sessions.

How Accessibility Relates to Section 508

The terms "Section 508 conformance" and "accessibility" are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different, related things.

Section 508 Conformance

Section 508 is a standard that Federal agencies must follow when they develop, procure, maintain, or use information and communications technology (ICT). Conformance with Section 508 standards allows persons with disabilities to have access and use of information and data. This includes information which enables people to be informed, perform work, receive government benefits, and conduct business.

Accessibility

When referring to products or electronic information, the term "accessibility" or "accessible" describes how successfully persons with a disability can perceive, operate, and understand information they want or need.

Everyone benefits from accessibility. Accessibility means that all people can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with electronic information and actively participate in the digital world. 

Although the resources below were designed for federal government workers, they can be helpful for WIC agencies to create, procure, and maintain accessible digital content for participants and staff alike.
