2019 Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month
October is SIDS Awareness Month. This year, the Safe to Sleep® campaign developed a digital toolkit for partners to help raise awareness about safe infant sleep. This toolkit offers two activity options, guidance, and resources for organizations to plan their SIDS Awareness Month activities.
The Safe to Sleep® campaign, available in Spanish, and provides a number of other resources, many tailored for specific communities, including African American, American Indian/Alaska Native and Spanish-speaking communities, to help with education and outreach efforts this month, and throughout the year, such as:
- A handout and video entitled, Breastfeed Your Baby to Reduce the Risk of SIDS
- Downloadable materials for caregivers, including handouts, brochures and door hangers. Many of these, as well as DVDs, can be ordered for free
- The Healthy Native Babies Project toolkit and guides, which provides videos, handouts and training for the American Indian/Alaska Native communities
- Resource links related to SIDS and to Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID)
The American Academy of Pediatrics also provides recommendations for infant sleep safety. The How to Keep Your Sleeping Baby Safe page includes a checklist for making a baby’s room safe, why "back is best" sleep position and other information.
