The State and local agency establish standardized breastfeeding peer counseling program policies and procedures and task-appropriate training for staff on the breastfeeding peer counseling program that is consistent with the WIC Breastfeeding Support Model for a Successful Peer Counseling Program.
Breastfeeding peer counselors add a critical dimension to WIC’s efforts to help women initiate and continue breastfeeding and provide a valuable service to their communities by addressing the barriers to breastfeeding through breastfeeding education, support, and role modeling. State and local agency peer counseling management and clinic staff’s understanding of their roles and responsibilities, as well as the establishment and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with the WIC Breastfeeding Support Model for a Successful Peer Counseling Program, are vital to implementing a successful peer counseling program.
