Food and COVID-19

Always use proper food safety when handling food

Good nutrition can help people cope with the stress related to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and while vitamins and minerals aren't meant to treat or prevent COVID-19, certain vitamins and minerals (e.g., vitamins C and D, zinc) may affect how the immune system works to fight off infections, as well as inflammation and swelling.

The best way to obtain these nutrients is through foods, and many of the foods in the WIC food packages provide foods high in these nutrients: vitamin C from fruits and vegetables and 100% juice, vitamin D in low-fat milk and soy-based beverage, and zinc in legumes.

Food Assistance during the COVID-19 Pandemic

On their Food and Food System Resources During COVID-19 Pandemic page, CDC provides a number of resources for children, individuals and families, early child care, food assistance programs, and Tribes and Tribal organizations.

Staying food safe can also support health and wellness. Currently, there is no evidence that food is associated with spreading the virus that causes COVID-19, however, safe practices for handling, preparing, eating, and storing food are always recommended, including rinsing fruits and vegetables under cold, running water. It is not recommended to wash produce with soap, bleach, sanitizer, alcohol, disinfectant or any other chemical.

Find this and more information, such as the risk of getting COVID-19 from food or food packaging, on CDC's Food and Coronavirus Disease 2019 page, available in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean.

Also, check out the social media toolkit, available in Spanish, for general information and the communication toolkit, available in multiple languages, for specific messaging targeting migrants, refugees, and other limited-English-proficient populations.
